Location: Rich Experience, 7435 N Oracle (West Side in Sun Center) Wednesday, August 4, 2010, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with one hour break for lunch
Please register at www.arichexperience.com thanks :) 6 CE hr, includes handouts and e-book (pdf)
Course Description: A relaxed class! We will do a few breathing exercises while sitting with eyes closed, to get in touch with our scalenes, external and internal intercostals, and diaphragm. We will discuss the benefits of exhaling more and belly breathing, and practice these. We will talk about running and other exercise. You will learn how ribs swivel like a bucket handle on the spne and sternum to create vacuum and pressure in the lungs. We will discuss controlled breathing and awareness of breathing without control, which I call breathing naturally.
At the massage tables we will practice massaging the scalenes, diaphragm, and intercostals during the recipient's inhale and exhale.
Instructor Biography: Patrick Moore is trained and exeperienced in breathing meditation, breathing muscles, and breathing for runners. He was immersed in za-zen Japanese breathing technique in 1982 at a 2-day experiment though the Psychology department of Whitman College. By 1989 he had read all the books by zen master D.T. Suzuki and practiced za-zen daily for almost a decade. In 1992-94 the Brian Utting School of Massage focused much attention on breathing muscle anatomy and deep tissue treatment. At age 35 Patrick began running distance, and during long runs in nature developed a natural running/breathing style that increases efficiency while loosening attachments, like free therapy. You will be receiving one chapter of his upcoming book, Healing Naturally.
Prerequisites: Please read as much as you can from the e-book that will be emailed to you.
Preparation: Please wear a t-shirt or yoga top without a bra, so that we may feel ribs through the clothing. We will not be touching the breast but working the ribs up to the breast boundaries. Please bring one bottom sheet and one pillowcase. Tables are provided. We will not be using oil or cream.
Name: Digging Up Fossils: Deep Tissue of the Spine Using Your Elbow
Location: Rich Experience, 7435 N Oracle (West Side in Sun Center) Friday, August 20, 2010, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (one hour break for lunch)
Please register at www.arichexperience.com thanks :) 5 CE hours, $100.00, includes handouts and e-handout (pdf)
Course Description: Your elbow is so perfect, you'd think it was created just to follow the lamina groove of muscles along the spine. By using your elbow, you may relax into one very slow stroke up, or down the paraspinals. Using your elbow saves your poor thumbs and wrists! Using your elbow does not mean you will use heavy pressure; just that your pressure will be steady and unvarying, which allows the recipient to trust your pressure and relax into it.
Releasing muscle tension along the spine helps the recipient to feel more relaxed at his core. Tensions along the spine are like buried ancestors from ages long past; fossils. Digging them up is priceless.
In this class you will learn how to be very sensitive with your elbow so that you can change your pressure from light to heavy depending on what you sense from the muscles, and of course the person's preference. You will learn to feel the shapes of the various muscles and their fiber directions, and to approach each muscle from various angles. You will learn great verbal and nonverbal communication so that you're giving the perfect amount of pressure always.
Instructor Biography: Patrick Moore learned deep tissue of the spine from Brian Utting in Seattle, 1993-94. One of the other students remarked, "Your elbow is moving so slow… its like a glacier." Like Patrick's elbow, glaciers move only a few inches per year but have a massive presence. Patrick is the author of "Melting Muscles," "Treating the Atlanto Axial Joint with Cranial Motion," and is working on two book proposals.
Prerequisites: None, though Coral Robinson's class the day before is recommended.
Preparation: Please bring a set of sheets and some massage oil (not cream) that is not slippery. Be prepared to receive and give 90 minutes of deep tissue.
Name: Deep Tissue of Hip Rotators and Psoas Using Your Elbow
Location: Rich Experience, 7435 N Oracle (West Side in Sun Center) Wednesday, August25, 2010, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (one hour lunch)
Please register at www.arichexperience.com thanks :) $120.00 6 CE hours, Includes handouts and e-book (pdf)
Course Description: Did you know your elbow is shaped specifically to fit perfectly into the abdomen to massage the psoas? And that using your elbow actually feels better to the recipient than using your hands? Your elbow also fits perfectly into the groove between the ischial tuberosity and the femur, so you can melt the gemellis, obturators, and piriformis, and of course, glutes!
Most people think that the elbow is used to provide more pressure. That's only one advantage. The elbow may be used with light pressure too. The greatest advantage for the recipient, is that your pressure will be steady—when she feels that your pressure will not waver, she can trust the pressure and relax into it. Most think the elbow cannot feel things. It is true you have no sensation in the skin over your elbow. But sensation is not the best way to feel muscles anyway. In this class you will learn to use your elbow to be very sensitive of the shape and density of muscles, and to sense when they are melting.
Instructor Biography: Patrick Moore was trained at the Brian Utting School of Massage in Seattle where he learned deep tissue of the psoas and glutes. Patrick participated in 200 hours of Osteopathic Technique including a one-week internship with Rich Phaigh in Eugene, Oregon. During this continuing education learned how Osteopathic Doctors assess joint range for hip rotators and psoas.
Prerequisites: none
Preparation: Please review origins insertions & actions of the glutes, piriformis (and the other five deep lateral rotators) Tensor Fascia Latte, and Psoas. Thanks! Please wear sweats, yoga pants or spandex that allows full range of hip motion. We will not be disrobing nor using oil or cream. Please bring one bottom sheet and one pillowcase.
Name: Low Acceleration, High Feedback Stretching
Location: Rich Experience, 7435 N Oracle (West Side in Sun Center) Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (no lunch break)

Course Description: Advanced Muscle Energy Technique and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. These are fancy-sounding names for what is better called, "Hold-Relax Stretching." You may have learned this before, but the key to making it work is your sensitivity to the "easy motion barrier." If you accidentally cross this barrier even once, the person's brain will no longer sense you as "safe" and you'll have no more luck lengthening his muscles. The remedy for this is practicing sensing the "easy" or "pathological" motion barrier, the place in the range of motion where muscle guarding first begins (high feedback). Moving a person's limbs must not only be slow, but transitions from stopped to moving must be ultra gentle (low acceleration). You will practice clear commands, unvarying resistance during the "hold" phase, and how to write notes on gains. You will practice with partners to lengthen shoulder rotators, hip rotators, or any other muscle group you wish to practice (not the neck). Learning to feel the easy motion barrier will help your sensitivity and connection with the person's brain. This is the safest way to stretch.
Instructor Biography: Patrick Moore was first inspired to become a massage therapist in 1991 while watching Randy Nakasone, PT do Osteopathic Techniques. Patrick began taking CE courses in MET before his massage school year was finished. By 1995 he had completed 120 hours of MET training with Rich Phaigh including a one-week observation of Rich's practice in Eugene, Oregon. Patrick designed assessment and SOAP charts to reflect all the muscle lengths in the body, and specialized in MET as a medical massage therapist in Seattle from 1994-99. He was a "preferred provider" for Blue Cross/Shield, auto and on-the-job injuries. He has been a CE provider and author since 2002.
Prerequisites: none
Preparation: Please wear loose or stretchy clothing so that you may be stretched by your partner. Please bring one bottom sheet and a pillowcase.
