Mirror Neurons: Sense How Recipients Feel Therapy

Wednesday, December 15, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. $100 for those who need CE certificate, $50 for those who do not. Please register by Dec.1, thank you.

Human brains, but not those of other animals, are equipped with mirror neurons that imagine how it feels to be someone else. Therapists tuning in to this process will have dramatically different results. First, you have your own mirror neurons which provide you very accurate information how the recipient feels each moment of his session, from the phone call to make the appointment, intake interview, treatment, through payment and rescheduling. When you are tuned in, you no longer need to ask, “How’s the pressure?” you already know how he feels and can modify each millisecond. Secondly, the recipient also has mirror neurons. He uses his to sense what it is like to be you, treating him. Why is this beneficial? Because now you don’t have to do anything to serve him, you simply be those qualities you want him to be. If his being more patient would help him heal, all you have to do is be more patient and then he will feel how that works. Mirror neurons explain why a therapist can influence someone else’s muscles to relax.

Group discussion with exercises. There will be time for you to ask about a particular person you work with so that you leave with specific ideas how to help that person next time you see him or her. You will also engage in two exercises with a partner, one verbal, one nonverbal using touch, and time for feedback.
